Volunteer

Volunteers donate their time to support adoptable animals in the store; foster; TNR or trap, neuter, and return; or provide community outreach. Volunteers must be 18 years or older; Those under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian during all volunteer activities.

Most volunteers help care for adoptable animals at PetSmart. Two to three volunteers are scheduled every day to perform the duties listed below.

  • Sweep out and wipe down cages to ensure animals are clean, safe, and comfortable.

  • Scoop and replace litter as needed.

  • Refresh water and dry food bowls in cages, and distribute wet food.

  • Play with, pet, and otherwise help cats build trust and comfort. Set up tents and place cats in them for supervised playtime as appropriate so they can exercise, socialize, and interact with other cats and visitors (being mindful of dogs and other animals in the store).

  • Answer questions about adoptable animals and adoption process. Facilitate visits with adoptable animals.

  • Administer medications, eye drops, vitamins, or other supplements. Clip nails, brush fur, clean eyes and/or ears, and provide other care as needed.

  • Most importantly, the heart of your volunteer experience is to give our in-store cats plenty of love and attention! Your care makes all the difference in helping them thrive while they wait for their forever homes.
